Van Gogh’s Earring
This project’s objective was to learn about stone cutting and creating a piece from the stone. The stone I chose was blue sodalite and I carved it into a triangle from a tumbled square. The inspiration behind this piece came from Van Gogh’s Starry Night. When I first looked at the stone, the colors reminded me of this painting hence the swirl design with the brass circle element. My favorite part about this piece was that I purposely created only one earring because of the story of Van Gogh’s ear being cut off. In fact, Starry Night was painted from the window of the mental asylum Van Gogh was at due his ear incident.
